We’ve lost many of our most beautiful, biggest and oldest trees to age, disease and a series of harsh winter storms! The Shade Tree Commission and a team of dedicated volunteers have been working to restore the borough’s tree cover and have planted over 100 new trees over the last few years! But we’re still losing trees faster than we can plant them… This fall, the Shade Tree Commission will again be leading volunteers in planting trees. We need your help in planting the next hundred! Our tree order will be due in late summer, so if you are interested in providing a home for a tree, please let us know soon. We plant trees along the streets and sidewalks, as they provide maximum benefit for reducing heat island effects, shading our sidewalks and calming traffic. Trees are planted either in the strip between the sidewalk and the street, or on front, side or rear lawns within 10' of the sidewalk. The trees typically cost round $60 and are planted by volunteers - a great bargain! If you are interested in providing a home for a tree on your property, please fill out the form here: https://tinyurl.com/stc-fall-18. Since the last update the crew laying main on Narberth Ave have nearly completed their installation from Haverford Ave to Woodbine with a tentative date set for this Wednesday for the tie in and gas on. From There they will continue laying on Narberth Ave from Woodbine Ave to Montgomery Ave with lateral pieces extending out to the tie in points on Wayne Ave and Price Ave East of Narberth. The conversion of the gas main on Barrie Rd off of Essex Ave went without a hitch completing our work on Barrie. The crew that did the conversion has since moved over to the culvert work at Woodside and Wynnewood once they have the pipe through the culvert they will continue installing the main up Wynnewood Rd to the train bridge. Once all the main is installed through the culvert and up to the train bridge we will put the main on gas. Once on gas there will be a single tie in by the dead end of Elmwood on the opposite side of the creek to tie in the leg we laid in 2016. The crew laying main on Grayling Ave have completed the installation and the main is now active. They have since moved on to another township. We will be moving a crew in Monday next week to begin retiring some of the old mains where the service crews have transferred all of the services to the new main. The streets we intend to retire are listed below.
Once the mains are retired on these streets this crew will move up to Price Ave to install the main between Narberth Ave and Grayling Ave. This main will not be on gas until the main on Narberth Ave between Woodbine and Montgomery Ave is tied in. The service crews may begin to reenter Narberth mid to late next week as they wrap up the first stretch of services on Montgomery Ave in Lower Merion. They will move to Grayling Ave between Woodbine and Price first then move to the Essex Ave project working services on the streets listed below.

PECO is modernizing all the gas lines everywhere in the state and they started Narberth in 2016. The gas line replacement is a three-step process: they replace the line in the street; then they replace the lines going to each building; then they come back at the end and re-pave the street. (They have to re-pave the half of the street they affected. The Borough is paying to pave the other half.) The South side was finished in 2017. The North side is bigger and will take a few years. Utility Line Services is replacing the PECO gas lines throughout the Borough. The main project outlines are at https://www.narberthpa.gov/…/project-…/ongoing-construction/. Here is the May 11 update on the project: The main crew laying on Hampden Ave from Haverford Ave through the dead end North of Woodbine Ave have completed their install and gas on procedure and have progressed to Woodbine from Hampden to Montgomery Ave. Early next week they will be crossing Montgomery Ave at the intersection of Montgomery and Woodbine and getting gas on this section of main. From there they will continue their installation on Woodbine Ave from Hampden to Essex Ave. The main crew laying on the Essex Ave job have installed from the end of Wynnedale Circle through the intersections of Price and Essex and will continue laying down Essex toward Haverford Ave. I added another main crew to lay the offshoot sections of this main on the streets listed below yesterday, to expedite getting gas on this project.
The week of May 21st I would expect to have a main crew moving onto Iona Ave starting at Lantwyn Lane progressing to Woodbine Ave then tying the main into both ends. Then they will move to the other side of Woodbine laying on Iona toward Montgomery Ave stopping short of Montgomery where the existing cast iron main ends. I currently have service crews transferring the services on Hampden Ave from Haverford Ave to the dead end North of Woodbine. It is expected that we would have these services complete by the end of this week. The crews will be moving back to Lower Merion to work the services on a job we just the gas on, and should return either Friday of next week or early the following to Woodbine Ave between Hampden and Montgomery pending the gas on procedure. The low pressure mains on Sabine Ave between Essex and Narberth, as well as Price Ave between Essex and Narberth have been retired. This is the latest project schedule spreadsheet (as of 5/11/18)
